The New York Department of Motor Vehicles has procedures where someone’s car can be transferred to the next of kin soon after death without going through the probate process. But how about a boat? Shouldn’t that easy process apply for a boat the same as a car? What should be, and what is, are two different things. The New York DMV procedures don’t apply for a boat: you’ll have to go though probate. If the value of the boat is under $50,000, the simplified Small Estate procedures may be available.
